There are a number of grand or historic churches in Fairfax Station's church district; this Episcopalian house of worship, just over a dozen years old, is among the most modest.
Unlike most of the churches which line Ox Road, the aptly-named St. Peter's sits back off the major thoroughfare, has minimal signage and is even somewhat difficult to find.
St. Peter's was founded as a mission church by Church of the Good Shepherd, a church based in nearby Burke, Virginia, in 1988. According to a brief written history offered by the church, "Services began in 1988 in Bonnie Brae Elementary School, which remained our place of worship until we moved into our current church building in Fairfax Station in January 1998."
Members of the church hope to move beyond St. Peter's "Missionary church" status soon.
The church has a professional staff of five (including the vicar, the Rev. DeDe Duncan-Probe, as will as a parish administrator, a music director, an organist, a coordinator of children's ministries and a nursery supervisor). Joe Rouge, Steve Wharton and Alan Weaver are the church's lay leaders.
The church provides a "traditional worship service with no music," which starts at 8am on Sundays, as well as a "contemporary worship experience with music," which begins at 10:15 am.
Duncan-Probe is an engaging speaker with a strong sense of good humor. Her sermons may be heard at http://www.spiw.org/
St. Peter's also offers a few benches inside a small grove of trees, an area which is well-suited to reflection and prayer.
