The Bureau of Waterways Engineering operates state-level flood protection programs in the United States. It evaluates flood prone areas and designs stream improvement and flood protection facilities. The bureau also coordinates the planning, design and construction of federal flood control and bank stabilization projects. The Bureau of Waterways Engineering provides protection to communities during high water events. Its dam safety program oversees the regulation and safety of approximately 3,200 dams and reservoirs in order to protect citizens and properties. The bureau additionally administers the removal of unwanted dams. The Bureau of Waterways Engineering is a part of the Department of Environmental Protection, which is governed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
