History
During her early career a social worker repeatedly encountered folks navigating compounding stressors like lack of transportation, food insecurity, inaccessible resources (childcare, grocery stores, public transportation), Medicaid bias, and housing instability. She realized her clients were unable to recover because many of their challenges were due to systemic oppression leading to a constant state of emotional and mental distress. At the Center we realize that Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) persons have the greatest need but are the least able or likely to access mental health care due to various intersecting oppressions. Envisioning a community of compassion, that responds effectively and respectfully to the needs of all members of the community, the Center for Family & Maternal Wellness was founded by Reia Chapman, LCSW on March 16, 2016.
