First United Methodist Church was incorporated in 1835. Before that, the Port Jefferson Methodist Society met at the home of Zachariah Hawkins to worship with traveling reverends. The home was at the site where Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church sits today. In 1873, the current location of First United Methodist Church was established and a church was built. Since then, the church has been here for people to come and worship and enjoy fellowship with other congregants.
Sunday service starts with a hymn singing at 9:45 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m. A nursery is available for children younger than 3, and Sunday school for pre-kindertarten through 12th Grade starts at 10 a.m., from September through June.
The church has an extensive music program directed by Carol Landis. The choir performs regular concerts with visiting performers. The work the church does includes a Thanksgiving food drive, Habitat for Humanity, Nothing but Nets and Unicef.
