The Albany County Sheriff s Department was established in the 1660 s and is one of the oldest Sheriff s agencies in the United States. It employs a staff of more than 800 officers. It is a full-service law enforcement agency that provides services to the residents of Albany County, N.Y. The Albany County Sheriff s Department maintains uniform patrol, criminal investigation, drug interdiction, fire investigation, scuba, crime and accident investigation, snowmobile and marine patrol units. Located in Albany, N.Y., the department also has hostage and crisis negotiation teams, emergency management, advanced life support, bicycle patrol, K-9 and traffic safety sections. In addition, the Albany County Sheriff s Department operates civil, court security and inmate transportation, forensic, emergency medical services, county fire coordinators, domestic violence and special victims, and search and rescue divisions.
