The Department of Public Works, administered by the city of Portsmouth in North Hampshire, is responsible for the maintenance of municipal infrastructure that includes city streets, parks and municipal buildings, as well as water, sanitary sewer collection and treatment systems. Its engineering division designs and implements a variety of capital projects, such as road improvements and water and sewer repairs. The department reviews site and subdivision plans of new and proposed projects and provides technical support to other city departments. Its highway division maintains playgrounds and recreational facilities and performs snow removal operations. The Department of Public Works operates a sewer division that installs new sewer mains and cleans catch basins. Its water division installs hydrants and water meters, performs backflow testing and provides quality water for consumption.
