The Public Works Department is responsible for the planning, operation, maintenance and management of parkland, public buildings, ways, open spaces, grounds, town cemeteries, and water distribution and sewer collection systems. The department is additionally responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste. It provides motor equipment maintenance services to various town departments. The Public Works Department assists local community groups with river and pond clean-up events. It is governed by the town of Winchester in Massachusetts, which also maintains engineering, fire, health, recreation and information technologies departments. The town government s police department protects lives and properties, prevents crimes, enforces laws and maintains order.
