Chelmsford Town Cemetery

The Chelmsford Cemetery Department is responsible for operating and maintaining six public cemeteries, ensuring that their appearance is attractive and dignified. The Board of Cemetery Commissioners is an elected body responsible for the governance of these cemeteries. The commission appoints a superintendent to manage daily department operations. The town's six cemeteries are Heart Pond, Forefathers Burying Ground, Riverside Cemetery, Pine Ridge Cemetery, Fairview Cemetery and West Chelmsford Cemetery.

South End Burying Ground

The South End Burying Ground is believed by local historians to be a common man's cemetery that served working-class families during the early to mid-19th century. Although there are only 20 grave markers visible today, records indicate that more than 11,000 people were buried at the site. Visitors must contact the Boston Parks Department to enter the site, which is surrounded by a high granite wall.

First Burial Ground

This historical burial ground dates back to 1642, the same year Woburn was incorporated as a town. The First Burial Ground looks very much like it did in the 1600s, since very few changes have been made to the cemetery. The oldest stone in the cemetery is dated 1689-1690 and belongs to Deacon Josiah Converse, who was born in England and settled in New England with his family in 1630. Other interments include three officers from the Indian War, two victims from the Battle of Lexington and Concord and 15 Revolutionary War soldiers. In 1961, the Converse family erected a stone in memory of Deacon Edward Converse who was born in England in 1590 and landed in Salem in 1630. Converse was one of the founders of the city and also started the First Church of Woburn.
