This historical burial ground dates back to 1642, the same year Woburn was incorporated as a town. The First Burial Ground looks very much like it did in the 1600s, since very few changes have been made to the cemetery.
The oldest stone in the cemetery is dated 1689-1690 and belongs to Deacon Josiah Converse, who was born in England and settled in New England with his family in 1630. Other interments include three officers from the Indian War, two victims from the Battle of Lexington and Concord and 15 Revolutionary War soldiers.
In 1961, the Converse family erected a stone in memory of Deacon Edward Converse who was born in England in 1590 and landed in Salem in 1630. Converse was one of the founders of the city and also started the First Church of Woburn.
