Founded in 1685, the Barnstable County is located on 'the Cape' in Massachusetts. It houses the regional government facility of Cape Cod, Mass., that coordinates services for more than 15 towns. The county government has been recognized as a model for successful regionalization of services, including public safety, fiscal, health, human service, economic development and planning and land use functions. It has a population of more than 222,000 individuals. The county operates a variety of departments, including the Barnstable County Department of Human Services, the Barnstable County Retirement Association and the Barnstable County Rescue Training Academy. The Barnstable County has been operating a maintenance-dredging program on behalf of Cape Cod towns since 1996.
