The U.S. Zen Institute, located in Germantown, Maryland, is a Chinese Chan Buddhist temple that was established in 1988 after three nuns from Taiwan relocated to the area. Despite facing challenges such as language barriers and cultural differences, the temple has grown steadily and now offers a range of activities and services to its congregation.
After a devastating fire in 1992 destroyed their original temple, the US Zen Institute persevered and, with the support of the local Buddhist community, constructed a new 10,300 square foot temple that opened in 2001. Visitors are warmly welcomed to experience the teachings of Reverend Yong Hui and Reverend Guo Chun, enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch, and contribute to the completion of the new temple.
