Founded in 1984, the Shawnee Correctional Center houses more than 1,000 inmates. It provides protection for society through the humane and secure incarceration of adult male offenders. The center also offers educational programs and work assignment opportunities for inmates. The Shawnee Correctional Center conducts leisure time activities and provides food, sanitation, clothing, housing and medical services. In addition, it operates a satellite facility, Hardin County Work Camp. The center features over 20 buildings. The Shawnee Correctional Center also offers anger management, metal fabrication and vocational solutions. It provides the Incarcerated Veterans Transition Program. The center is a part of the Illinois Department of Corrections.
