Kappa Delta Sorority

Kappa Delta began at Longwood College in Farmville, Va. in 1897. It was one of the original sororities to be initiated at UGA in 1924. Recently, this UGA sorority was given The Five Star Award at the National Leadership Conference for Kappa Delta chapters. The sisters pride themselves on fellowship, education, leadership and promoting social interests. KDs, as they are called, are active participants in many scholarly and charitable organizations around Athens and on campus. Kappa Delta throws an annual Bass Fishing Classic on Lake Oconnee to support Prevent Child Abuse. The tournament recently raised $25,000 for the local and national branches of this philanthropy. Other philanthropies of KD include the Girl Scouts and the Dove Campaign for real beauty.

Phi Kappa Theta

Phi Kappa Theta formed in 1959 from the merger of two older fraternities--Theta Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa. The Delta Rho chapter of Phi Kappa Theta formed at UGA in 1963. Former UGA football coach Vince Dooley is one of the chapter's most recognizable names. Although a historically Catholic fraternity, Phi Kappa Theta embraces all religions. United by the motto, "give expecting nothing thereof," the brothers of Phi Kappa Theta are solid community members participating in many Sorority philanthropies, Relay for Life, ugaHEROS and Habitat for Humanity, just to name a few. They are active in UGA organizations such as The Red & Black newspaper, UGA Mock Trial, Order of Omega, student government and student political organizations. The Phi Kappa Theta house on South Milledge is representative of the south — white wood with a large porch and rocking chairs.

Alpha Gamma Delta

Located in a beautiful white veranada southern mansion, the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority is a tight-knit group of women who strive for sisterhood, camaraderie, and excellence in academics, character, and community service. Founded at Syracuse University in 1904, the Gamma Alpha chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta was brought to UGA in 1923. Its philanthropy is the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, which raises funds for all aspects of the diabetes cause. The Alpha Gams put on annual concerts in historic downtown Athens venues in order to raise money for the foundation. Around campus, the ladies are active in a wide variety of activities and organizations such as, competition cheerleading, student government, University Union, Relay for Life, and the Georgettes. Around Athens, the ladies are active participants with Athens Canine Rescue, mentoring and tutoring programs, and health organizations, among many others.
