The Wilton Conservation Land Trust first took possession of Gregg Preserve in 1979 and subsequently expanded its holdings to about 75 acres up until 1985.
The preserve's name derives from Dr. John Gregg, a noted Wilton resident who had the property donated in his name by Janet Gregg Howell. The property has a number of wooden bridges, a winding brook and a large wooded swamp. Visitors can hike, horseback ride, cross country ski and bird watch, perhaps occasionally catching a glimpse of one of many owls roosting in the tall trees that cover much of the gently rolling terrain.
