The Chez Panisse Foundation likens the provision of a healthy school lunch to the provision of physical education classes in schools, and wants to create a future where the former will seem as natural as the latter. In pursuing this goal, it developed a model for reform now implemented in the Berkeley Unified School District that eliminates almost all processed foods in favor of local, seasonal, organic meals prepared from scratch every day that still falls within the district's food budget. It also keeps up a one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom at the MLK Jr. Middle School in which children learn healthy lifestyle choices.
