Athens State University is a member of the Alabama College System and serves more than 2,500 students. It is located in Athens, Ala., and offers more than 30 degree courses and also offers various day, night, weekend and distance learning courses. The university offers degree programs in the college of arts and sciences, business and education. The College of Business is nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. It offers various scholarship programs through the Athens State University Foundation and Athens State University Alumni Association.

Founded in 1971, the Heritage Christian University offers a range of religious and spiritual courses related to the Bible for individuals. It provides classes in various subjects, such as English, history, psychology and philosophy. The university s facilities include dormitories and student apartments, as well as a student center that provides a kitchen, recreation room, television room and laundry. The Heritage Christian University operates the Alpha Center, which offers therapeutic counseling services in the areas of anxiety, depression, grief, loss, anger management, academic problems, eating disorders, premarital issues, divorce, relationships, communication, career and life transitions. Its undergraduate programs are accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), which is a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The Heritage Christian University is located in Florence, Ala.

J. F. Drake State Technical College offers a range of associate s degree programs, as well as certificates and diplomas to more than 1, 300 students.
