Created in 1971, The Maryland Office of the Public Defender is one of the largest legal services organizations in Maryland. The office works with a team of more than 1,000 employees. It provides legal services to individuals through over 10 district offices and over five specialized divisions. The Maryland Office of the Public Defender operates the Juvenile Protection Division, which monitors the conditions of confinement of juvenile clients committed to the care and custody of the Department of Juvenile Services. The offices also maintain a Forensics Division that provides training and technical and litigation support solutions. The Maryland Office of the Public Defender also manages Children In Need of Assistance.
