Muskego was founded in 1839 on what was then part of the Western frontier by German and Norwegian immigrants, most of whom were farmers. The city's name is derived from a Potawatomi Indian word meaning "sunfish." Incorporated in 1964, Muskego was once home to the Muskego Beach Amusement Park, a busy attraction for families and visitors from Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago. The park was open for more than 100 years.
Now home to more than 22,000 people, a wide variety of businesses, companies, restaurants and organizations, Muskego also has a dozen parks and three lakes all within city limits.
