The Housing Authority City of Milwaukee was chartered in 1944 and is responsible for the construction, management and provision of safe and affordable housing with services that enhance residents' self-sufficiency. The authority operates a federally funded Section 8 Program, which is designed to help low- and moderate-income families with the renting of privately owned housing facilities. It manages more than 4,400 units of low-income housing that are subsidized by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and administers over 5,280 Section 8 vouchers. The housing authority also owns and manages more than 960 units of affordable housing and over 60 units of market-rate rental housing. It issues and renews rent assistance certificates and vouchers. The Housing Authority City of Milwaukee additionally inspects privately owned housing units for rent assistance contracts.
