Carma Laboratories is best known for manufacturing Carmex, a medical lip balm. Alfred Woelbing started making Carmex in 1937, but production was limited during World War II because one of its principal ingredients, lanolin, was needed by the military to prevent rust on war equipment and vehicles. In 1957, the product had become so successful that production was finally moved out of the Woelbing home to a manufacturing facility in Wauwatosa, Wis., a suburb west of Milwaukee. In 1976, Carma Labs built a facility in Franklin, Wis. It uses assembly line equipment specially designed for production of Carmex.
