History
A Room of One's Own started out as a feminist bookstore in 1975, and has been a cultural touchstone for Madison's feminist and LGBT/queer communities for decades. In 2012 we moved a block away from our former location, into the beautiful bookstore space that once housed Canterbury Books. We consider ourselves a generalist bookstore now, with something for everyone, but women's interests, feminism, focus on grassroots community, anti-racism, and LGBT issues continue to be at the forefront of our business's concerns.
Specialties
We specialize in new and used books. One of the largest independent bookstores in the country, we started out in 1975 as a feminist bookstore, later merging with Avol's Used Books to become Madison's premier indie bookstore. We are a great stop for fiction, children's and young adult books, women's studies and LGBT books, science fiction, comics, greeting cards, history, spirituality, and much much more.
