WCHS-AM Radio went on the air September 15, 1927. The station was the third station in West Virginia to go on the air. Walter Fredericks who had an electric shop, but couldn t sell radios with no local stations established the station. One of the early shows broadcast was the Miss 580 Club, which, from 1938 to 1948, was hosted by Melva Chernoff. The network s sports base remains in Morgantown, but network newscasts, broadcast via satellite throughout West Virginia, originate from the studios of WCHS. The WCHS newsroom is a seamless operation of providing news coverage of the state of West Virginia and local news in the Kanawha Valley. WCHS Radio 58 is headquartered in Charleston, W.Va.
