The West Virginia Office of Laboratory Services, also known as State Hygienic Laboratory, has been a branch of the WV Bureau for Public Health since 1913. It promotes and strives to protect West Virginia's public health by supporting state and local infectious disease control efforts through diagnostic testing, preventing metabolic disorders detectable at birth, and assuring the quality of testing in clinical and environmental laboratories. Its services include training of laboratory personnel in West Virginia; providing quality control materials for county health department laboratories; approving clinical laboratories which perform prenatal syphilis serology in West Virginia; and approving clinical laboratories which perform AIDS-related testing on West Virginia patients. It also provides administration of the program for licensing clinical laboratory personnel. The West Virginia Office of Laboratory Services, located in South Charleston, W.Va., is operated by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
