Welcome to Beckley Surgical Group Beckley Surgery Center, Inc, performed its first procedure in February 1999 and was certified by Medicare in March of that same year. The Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care surveyed the center and granted certification in May 2000. The surgery center is owned by Dr. A. James Paine, Jr., M.D. who also serves as the president & CEO. The individuals serving on Beckley Surgery Center Board of Trustees offer a diverse background of both business and healthcare expertise. The Board meets at least annually to review the activities of the center, approve our direction and advocate for the community. The BSC includes one operating suite and one certified procedure room with accommodating recovery and outpatient areas. Should a patient require further care, transfer agreements exist with the area's 2 acute care hospitals. The BSC staff consists of RNs, LPNs, and surgical technologists. Our contracts with local anesthesia groups allow the provision of both MAC sedation and general anesthesia. The surgery center currently provides opthalmology, ENT, plastics, hand and podiatry surgical services. Our CON also includes surgical pain management, oral and gastro-endoscopy services. The medical staff credentialing process is similar to that of area hospitals and reappointment occurs every 3 years. Medical Staff Rules & Regulations and Bylaws are in place and there is an active peer review and quality/risk management program. The surgery center also benchmarks with other centers to offer measurement of our performance and outcomes. Our surgeon surveys reveal excellent ratings in all categories, especially the efficiency of our staff in moving the patients through the center (turnover). Surgeons are assigned specific surgical days and every consideration to "special requests". Contracts are in place both with Raleigh General Hospital and Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital for the provision of pathology services, procedures requiring frozen sections may be scheduled from 8 A.M. until 2: 30 P.M. The service of sterile processing and disinfection is supervised by a surgical technologist who is certified in central sterile processing. The incidence of nosocomial infections are less than 0.2%, the national benchmark data for National Patient Safety Initiative list the hospital infection rate at 7.5%.
