Founded in 1894, Underwriters Laboratories, also known as UL, is an independent product safety certification organization that provides a range of testing and examination services. The organization evaluates more than 19,000 types of products, components, materials and systems annually. It features over 19 billion marks and labels, including PSE, ENEC, UL GS and UL-MX. Underwriters Laboratories maintains a network of nearly 60 testing and certification facilities. The organization serves code officials and regulatory bodies in approximately 95 countries. It caters to the needs of the energy, lighting and chemical industries. Underwriters Laboratories provides testing services for alarms, infrared thermometers, inverters, controllers, and audiovisual and photovoltaic products. The organization administers the UL XTR program and operates a wholly owned subsidiary, UL Environment.
