The Mount Vernon Police Department is a law enforcement agency that prevents crime and promotes safety and well being of the citizens in accordance with city ordinances and state laws. It maintains a citizens police academy that provides training programs related to criminal laws, firearms instruction, defensive tactics, first aid, patrol procedures and investigations. The Mount Vernon Police Department employs a staff of more than 60 full-time, sworn officers and over 50 civilians and community volunteers. The department has a criminal investigations division that is responsible for the investigation of major crimes, including murder, robbery, aggravated assault, rape, child abuse, fatal traffic accidents, cyber crime and any other reported incident or crime assigned for follow up. Located in Mount Vernon, Wash., the Mount Vernon Police Department also has patrol and records divisions.
