The Shoreline Public Schools represent the core identity of the city of Shoreline, preceding the existence of the city by more than 50 years. The Shoreline School District was founded in 1944, and the district offices have called Shoreline Center home since 1990, after the closure of Shoreline High School at the site in 1986. The district has nine elementary schools, Einstein and Kellogg middle schools, the K-9 Room Nine School, and Shorecrest and Shorewood high schools. Shoreline's schools are a significant reason for Shoreline being twice named the best neighborhood to live in the Seattle area by Seattle magazine. People often move to Shoreline because of the school system. Concerns that Shoreline's schools would be annexed into Seattle were a major reason why the city of Shoreline was incorporated in 1995.
