Islander Middle School is the only middle school on Mercer Island and was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2003. Located on the South End of the Island, the school offers a variety of extra-curricular clubs and sports and is well known for its academic excellence.
In 2009, student MSP test scores were among the top 10 in the state, with 87 percent of students achieving math standards and 91 percent achieving reading standards in 2009. The school's classrooms (2009 staffing) are managed by 57 teachers and 36 specialist teachers and other staff as faculty.
The school campus is composed of three buildings, including two large gyms, auditorium and a popular student commons. As with most Island schools, the PTSA is very active here and sponsors a popular ski swap in the fall.
The school is unique in its administration by two principals, Aaron Miller and Mary-Jo Budzius.
