History
Established in 1937. HSDC has served the Puget Sound Area for over eighty years. We began as the Seattle Chapter for the Hard of Hearing when a group of mothers with deaf children partnered with a social club for hard of hearing women. Since our incorporation, HSDC has responded to changing community needs by recognizing what people need to realize their full potential. In the 1960s, we were the first organization in the entire United States to offer programming for the Deaf using sign language. Today, we reach more than 6,000 people annually. HSDC serves 13 counties across the Greater Puget Sound Area. We operate out of a main office in Seattle, with satellite offices in Bellingham and Tacoma that focus on advocacy for the Deaf.
Specialties
HSDC empowers people who are deaf, hard of hearing, and have speech differences. Our Tacoma office offers free assistance and information for Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing, and late-deafened people. We also offer education and training to community businesses and organizations that wish to better serve their Deaf and hard of hearing constituents.
