Burs Restaurant is one of those places where time stands still, the menu seems like an old friend and the waitress knows you by name. A landmark in Lakewood for more than 50 years, Burs is still serving the old-fashioned home cooking that made its reputation in the 1960s. “There's a real family feeling here,” says Susan Yockman, a shift manager. “You see the same people every day, and everybody knows everybody else.” Before there was a town hall, Burs was — and still is — the unofficial meeting place for Lakewood's movers and shakers. The 70-seat banquet room is headquarters for the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, Lakewood United and many other church and civic groups. Say hello to Tami, who's worked here 30 years and knows the regulars' orders by heart. Rose, the bartender, has been mixing drinks nearly as long, behind a bar lined with a solid wall of pull-tab games — the largest assortment, we're told, in the Tacoma area.
