Operational since 1896, the Volunteers of America is a nonprofit, faith-based organization that coordinates various human service programs. Its programs include housing and health care services. The organization serves more than 2 million people that include at-risk youths, elderly citizens, abused and neglected children, and disabled and homeless individuals in over 400 communities throughout the United States. It creates and manages housing programs that include support services and activities for residents. The Volunteers of America also provides after-school programs for children, transportation to medical appointments for senior citizens and training services for individuals with developmental disabilities. It promotes residential and outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug addicts. The organization additionally offers rehabilitative, counseling and employment services for people in crisis.
