Founded in 1951, The Nature Conservancy is the conservation organization working to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. Based in Charlottesville, Va., it has developed a science-based planning process called Conservation by Design, which helps to identify the highest-priority places landscapes and seascapes conserved, ensure biodiversity over the long term. The Nature Conservancy has seven-priority conservation initiatives to address the principal threats to conservation at the sites where they work, focusing on fire, climate change, freshwater, marine, invasive species, protected areas and forests. The American Institute of Philanthropy named the Better Business Bureau accredited conservancy a Top-Rated Charity.
