The Richmond Department of Public Works is responsible for administration and supervision of capital project, traffic engineering, urban forestry, and building and fleet management divisions. It offers a range of services that includes new road construction, bridge rehabilitation, and curb and gutter installation. The department s capital project division provides surveying, engineering and design services for public infrastructure projects. Its traffic engineering division maintains traffic signals and determines the placement and usage of speed limit and street name signs. The Richmond Department of Public Works also provides recycling services for newspapers, glass bottles, plastic containers, and aluminum and steel cans. The department also provides a range of maintenance services for city-owned streets, trees, vehicle and buildings. In addition, it provides and maintains the emergency communications radio systems used by local university police departments and some state agencies. The department is located in Richmond, Va.
