Entering Old Colony Shop is like stepping back in time. The brick row-home style shop was built in 1803, and specialties include antiques from the 1600s - 1800s, and archival framing services. The shop owner is known all the way to the White House for specialty ceremonial framing and for his historic finds and collections developed through travel, exploration and word of mouth. His collection of early Jamestown artifacts, a portion of which he donated to the Commonwealth of Virginia, won him acclaim and awards in the antiques circuit. Part historian, part social archeologist and part treasure hunter, many rare and interesting items show up in this shop to be exquisitely framed, from antique maps to snippets of colonial cartoons and writings. In the main floor showroom, very early works of art and furniture are displayed, as well as china and decorative accessories. Not many antique dealers work with pieces this old, so the shop is a known source for such items. The owner says he chose Alexandria as a base and has had his antique and framing shop here on south Washington Street for 30 years because he loves the "history, quaintness and charm of Alexandria and the wide range of exposure to old and interesting things that customers bring in.
