History
Oakland School offers an individualized academic program for girls and boys, ages 6-14. The program is a good fit for students with learning differences (dyslexia, ADHD, etc.) or those who are struggling in a traditional classroom and need a more supportive academic environment. Located in Central Virginia, near Charlottesville, Oakland's summer camp has operated since 1950 and the year-round school, which offers Day and Residential programs, began in 1967. Oakland specializes in teaching reading and building a strong foundation of skills in written language, math, study skills, and organization. An emphasis is on character development and fostering self-esteem and confidence. The extensive recreation program includes horseback riding, team sports, art, music and more. The beautiful 450 acre campus provides the perfect backdrop for the experienced and nurturing staff to create a positive learning environment for your child.
Specialties
Oakland School is a co-educational boarding and day school for students ages 6-14, at admission. Oakland offers an individualized program, ungraded curriculum, and daily one-to-one instruction for elementary and middle school students. Oakland's program is beneficial for students needing support in key areas, such as reading, written language and math. The program is well suited for students needing support in study skills, organizational skills, academic confidence and overall self-confidence. The small class size (5:1 student: teacher ratio) is beneficial for students struggling with attention issues and those that become overwhelmed or get lost in the larger class setting. Although the majority of our students need support in one or more areas, many students attend Oakland for one to three years to get ahead in academics as they transition to a larger, more competitive middle or high school setting.
