History
The winter of 1974-75 in Christiansburg was cold and snowy and the number of people seeking help with heat bills, rent or utilities was a heavy burden on Montgomery County's social service programs. It was taking four weeks for applicants to receive food stamps or unemployment benefits. Father Harry B. Scott III saw the need of a program that could fill the gaps in public aid. This was the birth of MCEAP. In the first year, MCEAP responded to 505 calls and extended $9,763.71 in assistance. In 2014, 40 years later, MCEAP responded to 2,064 calls and extended $179,327 in assistance. We're growing every year, and there still a huge amount of need we want to grow to meet in Montgomery County.
Specialties
MCEAP is a 100% volunteer-run organization with zero overhead cost. Our operations run entirely off of your donations and profits from the thrift store, and those funds go directly back into the community to serve those in need. We provide food, clothing, household items and financial assistance in order to fill needs that other agencies are unable to meet. Together we can provide a hand up instead of a handout!
