Community Development is a department operated by the town of Herndon in Virginia that is responsible for a variety of functions related to land use, development and community preservation. These functions include zoning verification and enforcement, site and subdivision plan reviews and comprehensive planning. The community development department helps ensure that uses within the town meet zoning ordinance requirements and reflect the goals of the comprehensive plan, as well as any overlay or special district policies that apply to specific property. Plans for new commercial structures and sites and for any changes to these structures go through Community Development for review and approval, as do plans and plats for subdividing any property in the town and for lot line adjustments. Its comprehensive planning program deals with the future of the town of Herndon, and attempts to preserve the character and heritage of the town, while accommodating growth and development in Herndon and throughout the northern Virginia region.
