The Smithfield Packing Company is a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, a pork processor and hog producer that processes approximately 27 million hogs and raises 14 million annually. Its collection of brands includes Smithfield, Smithfield Lean Generation, John Morrell, Gwaltney, Patrick Cudahy, Krakus and Stefano s. Since 1981, Smithfield Foods has made some 32 acquisitions to expand geographically and to diversify into new product segments. In 2002, the company acquired Moyer Packing Company and Packerland Holdings, which were subsequently merged to create the Smithfield Beef Group. It processes approximately 2 million cattle annually, which represents a 6 percent share of the United States market. Smithfield is based in Smithfield, Va., and owns subsidiaries in France, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, as well as operates joint ventures in Mexico, China and Spain.
