The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries works to manage wildlife and inland fish to maintain optimum populations of all species and provide opportunities for residents to enjoy wildlife, boating and other related outdoor recreation. It supports various educational outreach programs and materials that foster awareness and appreciation for fish and wildlife resources, their habitats and recreational opportunities. The department administers a fish and wildlife commission that is comprised of over five members who are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries also administers Project WILD, which is a national program that assists learners in the development of awareness, knowledge, skills and constructive action for wildlife and environment.
