Mediation has been a calling since I first learned about it in law school more than 25 years ago. During my many years in practice, it has become even clearer to me that mediation is much better than leaving decisions to an impersonal court system. Mediation reinforces each individual's humanity and respects each person's dignity. My mediation approach starts with the simple act of listening. Rather than focus on the end product, I help divorcing spouses to engage in a guided give-and-take. Together we look for a broader consensus before narrowing issues down to the specifics. Seeing 300 clients a year in Amherst, VA, I have witnessed many reluctant participants. Yet most end the process thankful for a quick resolution. Many realize how much money they have saved over traditional lawyer fees in the Amherst, Virginia area. Others are relieved that they didn't have to cede control to a court. For some, the mediation has started them on the road to healing after a difficult break-up.
