Big Stone Gap, a town in Wise County, Va., is a historic coal-mining town. The town comprises 10 percent of its residents reporting German ancestry and 11 percent of Irish ancestry. The historic sites and museums located in the town include Southwest Virginia Museum, Harry W. Meador Coal Museum and John Fox Museum. The town also features well-known parks such as Big Cherry Reservoir. The state s tourism department organizes many festivals devoted to holidays, history, food and harvests, wine and beverages, ponies, heritage, music, birds, antiques, boats and art.
