The Vermont Agency of Transportation works to provide an environmentally sound, multimodal transportation system, and human and financial resources for individuals. It operates construction, engineering, aeronautics, occupational safety, strategic planning and human resources divisions. The department has a public transit section that works with multiple state agencies and consumers to develop coordinated transportation services and programs. The Vermont Agency of Transportation additionally maintains a communication center that offers real-time traffic and travel information. Its program development division is responsible for the development of initial scoping and construction projects. The department administers a rail program that assists in the development of rail transportation options for passengers and provides support to improve infrastructure. The Vermont Agency of Transportation also issues various licenses, permits and identification cards, as well as conducts vehicle inspections. The department is headquartered in Montpelier, Vt., and maintains an office in Dummerston, Vt.
