The Department of the Navy is responsible for maintaining, training and equipping naval forces for wars and aggressions, as well as preserving the safety of the seas within the United States. The agency is administered by the Department of Defense. Founded in 1775, the Department of the Navy consists of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard. Its office of the secretary handles matters related to recruiting, organizing, supplying, equipping, training, mobilizing and demobilizing. The agency's operating forces and fleet commanders follows a dual chain of command. The Department of the Navy's provides naval forces and report to the appropriate unified combatant commanders.
