The Sweetwater Independent School District believes in democracy, in individual freedom, and in equality of educational opportunity. The school district exists to provide opportunities for all students to reach their maximum intellectual potential. About Sweetwater I.S.D The Sweetwater Independent School District serves approximately 2, 253 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 on seven campuses; high school, middle school, intermediate school, two elementary schools, an early childhood center and an alternative education campus. Sweetwater ISD is also the fiscal agent for a seven-member county alternative learning center and a nine-member school special education shared service arrangement. In Sweetwater, excellence is not only a goal, it is a standard. All three elementary campuses are exemplary, the High School is acceptable, and the Middle School is recognized. Students have opportunities to participate in UIL academic competitions. The fine arts program enjoys outstanding successes, especially in band and choral music. In athletics, teams consistently excel in football, basketball, baseball, track, softball, power lifting, volleyball, golf, and tennis. Description of the district The district's current enrollment is approximately 2253 students of which 508 attend the district's high school, 472 attend the district's middle school and 1273 attend the district's elementary schools. The district's staff is comprised of 37 district office staff, 189 teachers and 16 administrators. Additionally there are 28 office/support staff, 78 aides, 34 cafeteria and 52 maintenance/custodial staff. Sweetwater ISD is made up of 9 buildings: Sweetwater ISD consist of an administration building located at 207 Musgrove, Sweetwater, Texas; Sweetwater High School located at 1205 Ragland, Sweetwater, Texas; Sweetwater Middle School located at 305 Lamar, Sweetwater, Texas; Sweetwater Intermediate School located at 705 East Third, Sweetwater, Texas; East Ridge Elementary School located at 1700 East 12th Street; Southeast Elementary School located at 1201 Mustang Drive, Sweetwater, Texas; J. P. Cowen Early Childhood Center located at 700 W. Fourth Street; HOBBS Alternative Education Co-op located at 1317 FM 1614, Rotan, Texas; a Maintenance Department located at 1300 Crane, Sweetwater, Texas; and a Food Service Department located at 601 East 12th Street. Geographically, the Sweetwater ISD encompasses 297 square miles of rural territory. The U. S. Census Bureau reported the 2009 population estimate for the district as 14543.
