The Melvin Martin Center for Children's Safety, located in Abilene, TX, is an educational facility dedicated to teaching children about safety through interactive experiences. Safety City features a child-size town with miniature buildings, streets, traffic lights, and sidewalks, allowing children to learn about pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, fire prevention, and stranger awareness. With the support of the Abilene Police Department, the Abilene Fire Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety, Safety City has been providing safety education to thousands of children and adults from 27 Texas counties since its establishment in 1981.
Through its state-of-the-art fire education center and police education building, Safety City offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to help children recognize safety hazards in their everyday lives and make informed decisions to prevent injuries. Programs are available to first and third-grade school classes during the academic year, as well as individuals, day care centers, recreation centers, and church groups during the summer. Safety City is funded by the City of Abilene, with additional support from the Friends of Safety City and generous donors, ensuring that children across the region have access to vital safety education.
