History
Founded first as a roadside store in 1849, the Landmark Inn has undergone many changes over the years. Once known as the Vance Hotel, this property hosted frontier travelers and air force families throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as a private enterprise. in 1970, owner Ruth Lawler donated the site to the state, where it was managed by the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife until 2008. In 2008, the property was transferred to the care of the Texas Historical Commission, who currently manages the site. In 2015, the Landmark Inn State Historic Site reopened after a two year closure for renovation and restoration.
