Established in 1982, The Powledge Unit undertakes agricultural and facility operations and administers medical and educational programs. It employs a work force of more than 300 people. The unit offers ambulatory medical, dental, mental health and physical therapy services. It conducts educational programs related to automotive collision repair and refinishing, career and technology, painting and decorating, combination welding and cognitive intervention. The Powledge Unit provides services to the city and county agencies and the Texas Department of Transportation. It is accredited by the American Correctional Association. The unit is managed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which manages offenders in state prisons and jails and private correctional facilities.
