History
The town of Oak Ridge was constructed by the United States Government in early 1943 to provide living accommodations for personnel employed at the Clinton Engineer Works. Oak Ridge was built on what was once known as The Black Oak Ridge, owned completely by the governmant through the Atomic Energy Commission. The residents of the community were restricted to only those employed on the reservation. At one point Oak Ridge was the fifth largest city in Tennesse. The Manhattan Apartments were built in 1947 to house military personnel that worked on on The Manhattan Project, the making and storing of Uranium for the Atomic Bomb. Since then we have added modern touches to the Manhattan Apartments while still conserving the vintage feel.
