The Statewide Independent Living Council of Tennessee is an independent nonprofit organization governed by individuals with disabilities. Their mission is to promote and support the independent living philosophy through the implementation of the State Plan for Independent Living. Comprised of diverse members appointed by the Governor, the Council collaborates with the Tennessee Division of Rehabilitation Services to advocate for Tennesseans with disabilities, provide information and referral services, and support Centers for Independent Living.
The Council, federally mandated and funded under the Rehabilitation Act, 1992 Amendment, Title VII, believes in consumer control, choice, and empowerment. They work towards advancing advocacy and independence by engaging with all interested parties and recognizing that people with disabilities are the best experts on their own needs. Through their efforts, they aim to promote the Independent Living philosophy, develop the State Plan for Independent Living, and provide various services such as IL skills training, peer counseling, and community-based centers for independent living.
