Established in 1939, the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division, also known as MLGW, serves more than 420,000 residential and commercial clients. The division is governed by a five-member board of commissioners who are appointed by the mayor of the city of Memphis, Tenn. MLGW supplies electricity from the Tennessee Valley Authority, a federal agency that sells electricity on a nonprofit basis to more than 150 distributors. The division operates more than 10 water-pumping stations and over 175 wells throughout Shelby County, Tenn. MLGW also offers gas services for residential and commercial applications. It provides water services to more than 250,000 customers per day. Additionally, its Web site offers online bill information and bill paying options for the general public.
